Welcome to the Sunshine State Soap Company, based in sunny Central Florida!
Why should you use our soap? Let me tell you how I became involved in making, then selling, natural soaps.
After many years of using 'regular' soap, I noticed that my skin was becoming increasingly dry and itchy; it didn't matter which brand I used, if it was fragranced or not, or even how much it cost - the result was the same - dry, itchy skin. I put it down to age until I was persuaded to check out the ingredients to see if I was allergic to one of them. What I found out was amazing - regular soap contains very little, if any, soap! Just a large amount of chemicals and fragrance which produces bubbles and provides very little benefit to your skin. Regular soap - the kind many of us buy for ourselves and our families every week, is not soap. So, I began making my own soap so that I could control what went into making it.
Firstly, the bulk of store brand soaps contain an ingredient - among others - called Sodium Tallowate (Tallow), which is animal fat, mostly from cows. It is very, very inexpensive, because tallow is typically the cheap fat/bone/hide byproduct leftover from the commercial meat industry. Because commercial soap is manufactured on an immense scale it is safe to assume that the manufacturers must be getting their supply from a huge source, usually large slaughterhouses and feedlots. Their supplies usually come from sources where the cattle have been fed antibiotics and hormones. Remember that if these are evident in the catlle, they will also be eveident in the tallow which is taken from their carcass.
Secondly, the remainder of a commercial bar is detergent, much like the ones that are used in laundry products. Any glycerin is generally removed in the commercial soap making process and sold on to the much more lucrative cosmetic producing companies, who in turn charge a high price for the products they produce with it - ironically, moisturizers etc. which are intended to supply elasticicity and moisture to your skin which is stripped away by using commercial soap!
The rest of the bar consists of of fillers, fragrance and either color or Titanium Dioxide (to make it white!).
Commercial bar 'soaps' that contain animal tallowate:
- Neutrogena (except Neutrogena Naturals)
- Irish Spring
Check out all of your 'store bought' bars - it can't be identified as soap because it really doesn't contain any! They are called 'cleaning bars' or 'bath bars' or 'body bars', or in the case of one of the most popular brands, Dove - a 'Beauty Bar'.
Just as we are always asked to think about the chemicals we put into our bodies on a daily basis, I ask you to think about what you put onto your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and whatever you put on the outer layers of your skin will eventually find its way into your body (personally, I would rather that be something to be of benefit, rather than something which uses chemicals to remove dirt and my skin's natural moisture).
The alternative? Natural soap containing a variety of oils and butters that benefit your skin, which can either be scented or not, but which retains its wonderfully nourishing properties and leaves you feeling that you have just given your skin the most amazing gift!
What is my skin like since making and using natural soap? Well, it isn't any younger but it isn't dry and it certainly is not itchy; it feels soft and I know that I am looking after my skin much better than I was before!
All the soap retailed at our Old Town Kissimmee store, or online, is made 'the old-fashioned way', with carefully chosen oils and butters (check out the ................. page to find out what is in our soap and the benefits they give to your skin). Once poured, it is 'cured' for a minimum of six weeks before being placed on our shelves.
Our Soaps contain saponified Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, and Shea Butter, as do our Salt Soap Bars. our Body Butters and our Sugar and Salt Scrubs are almost 100% natural (they contain a preservative). We use both Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils and a variety of other oils for their individual properties (Sunflower Seed Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Rice Bran Oil etc.).
THE MAJORITY OF OUR PRODUCTS ARE SOURCED RIGHT HERE, IN THE SUNSHINE STATE.
